If you have been trying to lose weight through diet and exercise, then it is very likely you have come across the term "the fat burning zone". The idea has circulated that if you exercise at lower intensity (60%-70% of your maximum heart rate) you burn more calories from fat, whilst if you exercise at a higher intensity (75% or more of your maximum heart rate) you burn from carbohydrates. Studies have shown that this is true, however, working out for 20 minutes at low intensity will burn less over all calories than if you worked out for the same amount of time at high intensity. So even if the high intensity exercise burns a lower percentage of calories from fat, overall the number of calories from fat will still be higher than if you work out at a lower intensity.
To explain lets use some simple figures! If you perform 30 minutes of low intensity exercise you will burn approximately 200 calories. 60% of these calories will come from fat, making it a total of 120 calories from fat.
If you perform 30 minutes of high intensity exercise you will burn approximately 400 calories. 35% of these calories will come from fat, making it a total of 140 calories from fat.
So you can see that the higher intensity exercise not only burns more calories, but also burns more calories from fat! Therefore it is safe to say that the most efficient way to lose fat is by doing high intensity activity.
Having said all this, there are still many benefits to low intensity activity. Some people just don't like working themselves into a sweating, puffing frenzy! Or if you have injuries that prevent you from engaging in high intensity exercise you may just want to increase the duration of your low intensity exercise to burn more calories.
Most people that are embarking on a weight loss program have likely not been exercising frequently in the past, so the thought of starting a rigorous high intensity routine may not be so appealing. The most important thing for weight loss is consistancy. Even if you start off with a 30 minute walk 3-5 days a week, you are better off than only doing one intense workout and then dreading exercise forever more.
At the end of the day, the key to weight loss is calories in versus calories out. However you prefer to burn those calories is up to you! Do what suits your lifestyle, fitness level and enjoyment and you'll be more likely to stick with it!
